Ib Melchior was born and raised in Denmark, the son of renowned opera singer and film star Lauritz Melchior. He went on to graduate from the University of Copenhagen, after which he joined the English Players, a prestigious British theatrical company. Melchior began his career as an actor, but soon transitioned to stage management and co-directing, touring Europe with the troupe.
