Born Hugh Michael Horace Dancy in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, England, he is the son of Sarah Ann (Birley),an academic publisher, and Jonathan Peter Dancy, a philosophy professor and writer. He has a brother, Jack, born in 1977, and a sister, Kate, born in 1980. Growing up in Newcastle-under-Lyme, Dancy developed a strong foundation for his future career in the arts.
Early roles in television series such as Trial & Retribution, Dangerfield, Kavanagh QC, and Cold Feet, as well as his appearances in Sam Mendes' David Copperfield and BBC productions like Madame Bovary and Daniel Deronda, showcased his talent and versatility. He also portrayed "D'Artagnan" in the series Young Blades.
Dancy's breakthrough role came with his appearance in Ridley Scott's war drama, Black Hawk Down, as "Medic Kurt Schmid."
