Davis, the second of three siblings, was born in Englewood, New Jersey, to Joan, a librarian, who previously worked at the elementary section of Elisabeth Morrow School, and William Davis, an engineer. Her mother, a great storyteller, would frequently take Davis and her siblings to museums or cultural events every Sunday after church.
