Heinrich von Kleist, a German literary figure, was born on October 18, 1777, in Frankfurt/Oder, Germany, to a priest father. Following his father's untimely death when Kleist was just 11 years old, he was forced to assume early responsibilities to support himself. Despite this challenging start, he managed to attend high school until the age of 15 before being compelled to join the Prussian army in their western campaigns.
Through his military service, Kleist steadily rose through the ranks, ultimately achieving the position of lieutenant. However, he quit the army in 1799 and pursued higher education in his hometown, focusing on philosophy, physics, mathematics, and political sciences.
Subsequently, Kleist spent time in Weimar, where he crossed paths with renowned writers of his era, including Wieland, Goethe, and Schiller. He eventually entered the Prussian state as a secretary, but his literary endeavors failed to garner significant recognition, and he found his role in politics unsatisfying.
Personal tragedy struck when Kleist's girlfriend fell gravely ill, and he chose to accompany her on her final journey. Together, they met their demise on November 21, 1811, at the age of 34, using a gun.
Kleist's literary legacy is multifaceted, as he wrote enduring works, including the stage play "Prinz Friedrich von Homburg," which, although often celebrated, was also criticized for its nationalist undertones.
