Heather Tobin is a highly accomplished Canadian filmmaker, boasting a multifaceted skill set that includes directing, writing, cinematography, and editing. She earned her degree in film from Niagara College Canada's three-year Broadcasting Program, graduating with honors as a Film Major.
Throughout her academic tenure, Tobin received numerous accolades, including the prestigious Bob Johnson Award for best all-around student in academics and practical work, as well as awards for best cinematography in a short film and her thesis paper on the importance of the female vision in the film industry. Additionally, she was a finalist for the 2003 National Apprenticeship Training Program with the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television.
In 2008, Tobin won the Barrie Emerging Artist Award, solidifying her position as a rising talent in the Canadian film industry. The same year, she founded her own independent film company, "To Each Her Own Films," which has since produced a diverse range of projects.
Tobin's notable works include a broadcast commercial featuring Olympic figure skater Steven Cousins, a short film entitled "Envoy," and a feature-length documentary on same-sex marriage, "I Do?," which premiered at the New York International Independent Film and Video Festival in 2005 and received an award for Best Gay Film.
Her subsequent projects include the feature-length drama "To Each Her Own" (2008),a heartwarming lesbian coming-out story that has won numerous awards at festivals worldwide. The film played at over 60 festivals globally, earning accolades such as Best Lesbian Drama at the Long Island NY's Gay and Lesbian Film Festival, Best First Feature at Toronto's Inside Out Gay and Lesbian Festival, and an audience 1st Runner-Up award for Best Film at the South Texas Underground Film Festival.
Tobin has also worked as a camera operator for Out TV's hit show "Chris & John to the Rescue (In Provincetown & Summer Camp)" (2007-2008) and created a promotional video for the biggest sports and memorabilia card show in Canada at the International Centre in 2010, featuring notable hockey players such as Paul Coffey, Bobby Clarke, and Grant Fuhr.
In addition to her feature film work, Tobin has also produced numerous wedding, corporate, and music videos. Her most recent project, "Route of Acceptance" (2012),is a lesbian dramatic concept film that explores the idea of destiny versus fate. The film has been touring the world festival circuit since 2012, playing at over 20 international film festivals and winning the award for Best Director at the Out Film Festival in Connecticut in 2013.
