Biography

Harrison Schmitt, a multifaceted individual with a remarkable career trajectory, has traversed the realms of science, politics, and business with remarkable aplomb.

Born and raised in Silver City, New Mexico, Schmitt's innate intelligence and academic prowess led him to earn a Bachelor of Science degree from the California Institute of Technology, followed by a Master's degree in Geology from Harvard University.

Following his academic pursuits, Schmitt joined the U.S. Geological Survey's Astrogeology, where he played a pivotal role in developing geological field techniques that would later be utilized by NASA astronauts on the Moon. His exceptional work caught the attention of NASA, who subsequently hired him in 1965 to examine the lunar soil and rock samples retrieved from astronaut missions.

Schmitt's impressive credentials and expertise led to his selection as a member of the Apollo 17 flight crew in 1971, a mission that marked a significant milestone in human space exploration. Upon the successful completion of the mission, Schmitt actively contributed to documenting the Apollo geologic results and spearheaded the organization of NASA's Energy Program Office.

In 1975, Schmitt bid farewell to NASA and, at the urging of friends, began to contemplate a career in public office. The following year, he was persuaded to run as the Republican nominee for the U.S. Senate against incumbent Senator Joseph Montoya. Despite New Mexico's historical tilt towards Democratic candidates, Schmitt's compelling oratory skills and campaign prowess ultimately secured a surprisingly wide margin of victory.

Throughout his tenure in the Senate, Schmitt consistently voted along conservative lines, remaining a stalwart advocate for the space program and technological development. He was a vocal supporter of President Ronald Reagan's policies.

However, in 1982, the nation was grappling with a severe recession, and Schmitt's perceived indifference to New Mexico's economic woes led to a challenge from then-state Attorney General Jeff Bingaman. Schmitt's late-campaign negative ads, based on inaccurate information, ultimately backfired, and Bingaman emerged victorious with a 54% to 46% margin.

Following his defeat, Schmitt opted to depart public life and transition into the corporate world. He was subsequently honored as an honorary fellow by the Geological Society of America and has occasionally contributed articles on public policy issues.
