Biography

Gregory Ulas Powell, a notorious American criminal, orchestrated a heinous crime on the evening of March 9, 1963, by kidnapping two Los Angeles Police Department officers, Ian Campbell and Karl Hettinger. Accompanied by his accomplice, Jimmy Lee "Youngblood" Smith, Powell led the officers to a desolate onion field near Bakersfield, California, where a tragic event unfolded. Officer Campbell's life was brutally cut short when he was fatally shot in the onion field. Powell's sinister actions earned him the infamous moniker, "Onion Field" Killer, as his story was immortalized in Joseph Wambaugh's 1973 non-fiction book, "The Onion Field".
