Gregory Monro's artistic journey began in Paris, where he was immersed in American culture from a young age. He was fascinated by the works of renowned filmmakers such as Steven Spielberg, Alfred Hitchcock, Stanley Kubrick, Frank Capra, and Sergio Leone. However, it was the French comedian Louis de Funès who truly sparked Monro's passion for acting.
Monro started his acting career at the tender age of nine and made his first film appearances at thirteen. After completing his studies at the French Film School ESRA in 1997, he attended Jack Waltzer's masterclass in Paris and New York for several years. This experience laid the foundation for his future endeavors.
Since 1999, Monro has written, produced, directed, and performed in numerous short films, many of which have been showcased at international film festivals. His work is deeply rooted in his fascination with the American West and its legendary figures, particularly the feminine condition.
Monro is a prolific author, having written several books about Calamity Jane's character. He has also designed a special exhibit and directed a docudrama for European broadcaster Arte, which featured Calamity Jane's diary and letters.
In recent years, Monro has focused on directing biographical documentaries. His notable works include "Louis de Funès Forever", "Calamity Jane: Wild West Legend", and "Jerry Lewis: The Man Behind the Clown", which have been selected at prestigious film festivals such as the Telluride Film Festival, the Lumière Film Festival, and the Haifa International Film Festival.
Monro's documentary "Michel Legrand: Let the Music Play" was nominated for an International Emmy Award in 2019, and his latest film, "Kubrick by Kubrick", premiered in 2020 and 2021 at the Tribeca Film Festival. The film has been selected at numerous festivals, including the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival and the Deauville American Film Festival.
In 2021, "Kubrick by Kubrick" received several awards, including an International Emmy Award, a Rockie Award at the Banff World Media Festival, and a Focal International Film Festival award.
