Gregory Alan Maddux, also known as "Mad Dog" and "The Professor", is a former professional baseball player who made a lasting impact on the sport. Born on April 14, 1966, Maddux is a former Major League Baseball pitcher who is best recognized for his impressive careers with the Chicago Cubs and Atlanta Braves.
Throughout his illustrious career, Maddux achieved numerous remarkable feats, including being the first pitcher in MLB history to win the Cy Young Award for four consecutive years, a record matched by only one other pitcher, Randy Johnson. During those four seasons, Maddux accumulated an impressive record of 75-29, boasting a minuscule 1.98 earned run average (ERA),while allowing less than one runner per inning.
Maddux is also the only pitcher in MLB history to win at least 15 games for 17 consecutive seasons. Furthermore, he holds the record for the most Gold Gloves with an impressive total of 18. A master of control, Maddux won more games during the 1990s than any other pitcher, and he ranks 8th on the all-time career wins list with an impressive 355 victories.
Since the introduction of the live-ball era in 1920, only Warren Spahn has recorded more career wins than Maddux, who is one of only 10 pitchers to achieve both 300 wins and 3,000 strikeouts. Maddux is also the only pitcher to record over 300 wins, over 3,000 strikeouts, and fewer than 1,000 walks.
In his post-playing career, Maddux has transitioned into the front office, serving as the special assistant to the general manager for the Texas Rangers.
