Gordon Davidson, a pioneering figure in the world of theatre, held the esteemed position of Artistic Director at the Center Theatre Group/Mark Taper Forum at The Music Center from 1967 to 2005. In addition to his tenure at the Taper, Davidson also served as Producing Director of the Center Theatre Group/Ahmanson Theatre for an impressive 15 years, and even led the inaugural season at the Kirk Douglas Theatre as Artistic Director from 2004 to 2005.
Throughout his illustrious career, Davidson played a significant role in redefining the landscape of theatre in Southern California, and his influence extended far beyond the region, shaping the course of theatre nationwide and globally. As one of the founders of the regional theatre movement, Davidson left a lasting impact on the industry.
Under Davidson's guidance, hundreds of productions premiered at the Taper, and he oversaw numerous special projects sponsored by the theatre. His direction of many plays staged at the Taper received widespread acclaim, both in Los Angeles and New York, earning the Taper a prestigious Tony Award for theatrical excellence in 1977.
Born on May 7, 1933, Davidson passed away on October 2, 2016, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire. He is survived by his loving wife, Judi; their children, Adam and Rachel; and five granddaughters.
