Biography

Glyn Houston, the younger brother of renowned actor Donald Houston, embarked on his professional journey with a humble start on his grandmother's milk round in Tonypandy, Wales. He then went on to hold various short-lived jobs and wartime appointments, including stints with the Bristol Aeroplane Company, the Fleet Air Arm, and the Military Police.

After being posted to Singapore, Glyn served with the Royal Signals Regiment, where his comedic talents were first recognized. He joined the Entertainments National Service Association and put together a variety show for serving troops, which toured India.

Following demobilization, Glyn's brother Donald helped him secure a position as assistant stage manager with the Guildford Repertory Theatre. Glyn's on-the-job training in touring plays laid the foundation for his screen career, which began with a role in the Ealing production of The Blue Lamp in 1950.

Over the next six years, Glyn appeared regularly in films, playing working-class types, sailors, and soldiers, often with a crime, naval, or military theme. These films included The Clouded Yellow, The Cruel Sea, Turn the Key Softly, and The One That Got Away.

Glyn's career in film and television spanned over six decades, during which he appeared in numerous productions, including classic dramas, Hammer horrors, and Norman Wisdom comedies. He also had leading roles in films like Solo for Sparrow and Emergency.

In addition to his work in film and television, Glyn was a prolific stage actor, appearing in plays by Chekov, Shaw, Miller, and others. Despite his successful career, Glyn's one regret was not having become a leading light on the Shakespearean stage.

In recognition of his outstanding contribution to film and television, Glyn Houston received a Bafta Cymru special award in 2008. His autobiography, "Glyn Houston, A Black and White Actor", was published the following year.

Glyn's remarkable career was marked by his versatility, range, and dedication to his craft. He will be remembered as a talented and accomplished actor who left a lasting impact on the entertainment industry.
