Gisselle Legere, a multifaceted individual, is a drama writer with a rich and storied background. Her earliest recollections date back to her childhood, where she would be rudely awakened at the crack of dawn by the sounds of Radio Marti, an anti-communist propaganda broadcast from the United States towards Havana.
Born to Cuban parents who fled their homeland as political refugees, Gisselle's childhood was shaped by the intense narratives of survivors of oppression and persecution, which deeply influenced her interest in politics and human rights. Unfortunately, a childhood vaccine led to the loss of most of her hearing, but the memory of those early morning wake-up calls and her family's history have had a lasting impact on her life.
Growing up deaf in a predominantly hearing world presented Gisselle with numerous opportunities to develop her observational skills, which served her well as she navigated various careers. She began as a ballerina, honing her physical abilities, before transitioning to judo competitor, where she refined her discipline and perseverance. Her scientific pursuits eventually led her to become a field epidemiologist, where she spent a decade working in bio-defense and tracking disease outbreaks worldwide. This hands-on experience has significantly influenced her writing, as she incorporates scientific speculation into her stories.
After creating a series of shorts, a web-series, and feature films, Gisselle realized that bringing stories to life was where her diverse interests converged. She began to focus on writing professionally and was subsequently selected for the Sundance Screenwriters Intensive in 2015. Moreover, she was a three-time finalist for various 2016 Sundance labs, including the prestigious Sundance & Sloan Commission for Science in Films fellowship. In 2017, she started writing for Disney-ABC Television, marking a significant milestone in her career.
