Gert Günther Hoffmann was born on February 21, 1929, in Berlin-Lankwitz, a district in the German capital city. He initially pursued a commercial apprenticeship before his interest in acting led him to appear in various stage plays. Prior to his successful career as a voice actor, he worked as a radio announcer for Berliner Rundfunk and lent his voice to numerous projects.
Hoffmann's voice acting career spanned over five decades, and he is renowned for dubbing many prominent actors, including Ben Johnson, Rock Hudson, Paul Newman, Lex Barker, Michel Piccoli, and Sean Connery, in most of their films. He also provided German voiceovers for notable actors such as Clint Eastwood, Richard Harris, Kirk Douglas, and Cary Grant.
In addition to his work in film, Hoffmann was involved in numerous successful television series, dubbing voices for actors like William Shatner in Star Trek (1966),Patrick Macnee in The Avengers (1961),and Robert Culp in I Spy (1965). He was a talented individual who wore many hats, as he also worked as a dialogue writer, dubbing director, and talent scout, discovering Thomas Danneberg in 1965.
Hoffmann's acting career extended beyond voice work, as he appeared in both minor and major roles on screen and performed on stage in Berlin, Hamburg, and Munich. One of his notable on-screen roles was as Arnold Matofski in Sonderdezernat K1 (1972).
Throughout his illustrious career, Gert Günther Hoffmann was affectionately known as the "King of Dubbing." He passed away on November 17, 1997, at the age of 68, due to cancer complications in Feldafing, a town near Lake Starnberg in Bavaria.
