Biography

Gerald Verner, a renowned writer of thrillers, was born Robert Stuart Pringle on June 26, 1897, in Streatham, London, England. With a prolific output, he penned more than 120 novels, which were translated into over 35 languages. His stage plays, adaptations of Peter Cheyney's "The Urgent Hangman" and Agatha Christie's "Towards Zero", were met with critical acclaim.

Many of his books were adapted into radio serials, stage plays, and films, cementing his status as a master of the thriller genre. During the 1930s, Verner wrote for popular magazines such as "The Thriller" and "Detective Weekly", which were later recycled as novels for Wright & Brown.

Influenced by the style of Edgar Wallace, Verner's work was a staple of the thriller genre. The Duke of Windsor, an avid fan of his thrillers, was presented with a special edition of 15 of his books, bound in blue.

In his early days, Verner wrote under the pseudonym Donald Stuart, and his output included 44 stories for the Sexton Blake Library. He also wrote six stories for Union Jack and three for The Thriller. Additionally, he penned two plays, "Sexton Blake" and "The Shadow", as well as two films, "The Man Outside" (1933) and "The Shadow" (1933).

Verner's son, Christopher Verner, has followed in his father's footsteps, supervising special effects projects for films and TV commercials. Gerald Verner passed away on September 16, 1980, at the age of 83, leaving behind a legacy of thrilling stories that continue to captivate readers to this day.
