Gerald Kargl, a multifaceted individual born in 1953 in Villach, Austria, is a writer and director renowned for his contributions to the world of cinema. His fascination with filmmaking began at the tender age of 14, when he started experimenting with a camera, resulting in a plethora of short films.
As his passion for film continued to grow, Kargl went on to found and organize the Austrian film festival, Die Österreichischen Filmtage, between 1976 and 1982. During this period, he also served as the founder and editor of the Austrian film magazine Filmschrift.
In the following years, Kargl's expertise in filmmaking led him to work on over 100 commercials and promotional films as a writer, director, and producer between 1984 and 1994. His exceptional work earned him more than 30 national and international awards, including the prestigious Cannes and Clio Awards.
In 1996, Kargl ventured into new territories by founding and producing the Hotel-TV City Lights, which he later sold in 2002. Since 1994, he has written, directed, and produced over 20 documentaries and educational films.
One of Kargl's most notable works is the psycho-thriller "Angst" (1983),which is based on the actual case of triple-murder, the "Kniesek case", where Werner Kniesek killed three people in St. Pölten, Austria, out of pure lust in 1980. This collaborative effort was made possible by Kargl's partnership with his co-writer-cameraman Zbigniew Rybczynski and the renowned composer Klaus Schulze, a member of the "Krautrock"-group Tangerine Dream.
