George Costigan is an English actor, born in Portsmouth, Hampshire, who grew up in Salford, Lancashire. He attended St Augustine's C of E Primary School on Bolton Road in Pendlebury, followed by Wardley Grammar School on Mardale Avenue in Wardley near Swinton.
Costigan's television career began in 1978, and he has since appeared in numerous productions, including The Barchester Chronicles, The Life and Death of King John, Rita, Sue and Bob Too, and many others. He has also starred in films such as Calendar Girls and Shirley Valentine.
In addition to his work in television and film, Costigan has a strong background in theatre. He created the role of Mickey Johnstone in Willy Russell's musical Blood Brothers, and has also played Estragon in Samuel Beckett's Waiting for Godot and Willy Loman in Arthur Miller's Death of a Salesman.
Costigan is in a long-term relationship with writer Julia North, with whom he has three sons, including actor Niall. He has also appeared in several soap operas, including Emmerdale, and has made guest appearances in shows such as A Touch of Frost and Happy Valley.
In recent years, Costigan has continued to work in television, appearing in shows such as Line of Duty and Happy Valley. He has also resumed his role as Nevison Gallagher in the latter series.
