George Arthur Gray was born on September 15, 1886, in Zanesville, Ohio, a hometown shared with the renowned writer Zane Grey. His parents, William T. and Anna Gray, were both Ohio natives. William, a skilled glass blower and manufacturer, worked in Zanesville and later relocated to Syracuse, New York.
After graduating from Syracuse University, Gray began his career as a reporter for the Syracuse Herald, followed by a stint at the Cleveland Plain Dealer, where he eventually rose to the position of city editor. His journalistic endeavors took him to New York City, where he worked for the New York World before joining the staff at Pathé News around 1926.
Five years later, Gray became the editor of The Columbian Beacon, the official publication of Columbia Pictures, a role he held until his untimely death at the age of fifty.
