Gene, the youngest of 12 siblings born to a Methodist minister, embarked on a remarkable journey that would ultimately lead her to become a renowned writer. Her fascination with the natural world, sparked by her early experiences with photographing birds and animals, caught the attention of "Recreation" magazine, which was so impressed that they invited her to contribute her writings to their publication. Not only did she write for "Recreation" magazine, but she also honed her skills by penning articles for "Outing" magazine.
