Gary England, a renowned meteorologist, has spent over four decades dedicating his career to the field of severe weather forecasting. He began his journey at the tender age of 17, joining the US Navy to further his studies in meteorology.
Gary's academic achievements are impressive, having graduated from the University of Oklahoma in 1965 with a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics and meteorology. This solid foundation has enabled him to become an internationally recognized authority in severe weather, earning him a reputation as a trusted and respected voice in the field.
Throughout his illustrious career, Gary has worked at several esteemed organizations, including A.H. Glenn and Associates, where he served as a consultant meteorologist, and KTOK-AM, a Clear Channel Communications station (now iHeart Media). He eventually joined KWTV, Oklahoma City's CBS affiliate, where he held the position of Chief Meteorologist from 1996 to 2013.
Gary's innovative approach to weather forecasting has led to numerous milestones. In 1981, he became the first person to utilize Doppler radar for direct warnings to the public, revolutionizing the way severe weather is forecast and communicated to the public. He also collaborated with Enterprise Electronics to implement the world's first commercial Doppler radar system.
Gary's charismatic personality and folksy demeanor have endeared him to many, earning him a devoted following in Oklahoma. In fact, his unique style has inspired a cult-like following, with some fans even creating a Gary England drinking game to enjoy during severe weather coverage.
Although Gary is no longer the Chief Meteorologist at KWTV, he remains an integral part of the team, serving as the Vice President of Corporate Relations and Weather Development at Griffin Communications LLC, the parent company of KWTV-DT.
