Gary DeMichele is a multifaceted American composer, film composer, musician, pianist, drummer, percussionist, multi-instrumentalist, and vocalist. He has been at the forefront of various musical genres, including jazz, pop, and film music. With a strong foundation in music and the arts, DeMichele has explored inter-disciplinary endeavors and fruitful collaborations, extending his work into the dance world and electronic music.
His film score work includes the critically acclaimed and award-winning "Big Night," directed by Stanley Tucci and Campbell Scott. The score incorporates American jazz and Italianate musical elements into the Italian-American cultural context of the film. DeMichele also wrote the "Big Night" theme and "Pascal's Waltz" as ballad offerings for two key scenes.
In his score for "Off the Map," directed by Campbell Scott, DeMichele created a different score in almost every way, meeting the unique visual, emotional, and psychological demands of the film. He employed a range of instruments, including percussion, vibraphone, cymbals, and pandeiro, to create an aural "picture" of the New Mexican landscape.
DeMichele has also composed scores for theatrical works, including "Miss Julie" directed by Campbell Scott, which premiered at the Williamstown Theater Festival, and "Drums in the Night" directed by Jon Kellam for the Actors Gang Theater. His sound design work includes the score for Tim Robbins' production of Bertolt Brecht's "Drums in the Night."
In addition to his film and theatrical work, DeMichele has composed music for dance and sound installation projects. He has also worked as a live performer, playing drums, percussion, keyboards, vocals, and vibraphone in various ensembles, including "Crayons," "Quartastrophphe," and "Static Disruptors."
DeMichele's past recordings include two soundtrack albums, "Big Night" and "The Impostors." He is currently working on two compilations of original music, one primarily vocal and pop-influenced, and the other instrumental and jazz-influenced.
Gary DeMichele spends part of his year touring overseas, including Denmark, Sweden, Italy, France, and Ireland, where he performs live dates and serves as composer in residence.
