A native New Yorker, Gameela took a non-traditional path to a career in acting, beginning with grade school plays where she showcased her talent and enthusiasm to her family, who patiently endured her performances. As she grew older, she discovered her passion for dance and was accepted into the prestigious Dance Theater of Harlem, where she had the opportunity to hone her craft.
However, a physical injury forced her to reevaluate her dance career, and Gameela decided to pursue a career in business instead. She worked in advertising while simultaneously earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in both Psychology and Marketing from the City University of New York's Baccalaureate Program.
Gameela's time in advertising proved to be a blessing in disguise, as the layoff of her division prompted her to return to school full-time and finish her degree. During this period, she took a class at Hunter College, where she stumbled upon a flyer for auditions for "Twelfth Night." This chance discovery rekindled her childhood dream of becoming an actor, and despite having no formal training, she decided to take a chance and audition for the role of Maria.
To her surprise, she was cast in the production, and went on to perform in three additional Shakespearean productions. Gameela then returned to school to further her education, studying with renowned instructors such as Terry Schreiber and Wynn Handman. Her hard work and dedication have paid off, as she has gone on to enjoy a successful career in theater, television, film, and commercials, proudly claiming the title of working actor.
Gameela's journey is a testament to her perseverance, resilience, and passion for the craft of acting. Despite facing setbacks and uncertainties along the way, she remained committed to her dreams and has achieved a level of success that is truly inspiring.
