Alfred "Fredy" Hirsch is indelibly linked to the education of children and young people within the confines of the Terezín ghetto, and subsequently, in the "family camp" at Auschwitz/Birkenau. Notably, the "children's block" established on Hirsch's initiative in the BIIb section of the Birkenau camp was a remarkable endeavor to create a small sanctuary within the confines of the notorious death camp. The primary objective of this endeavor was to provide Auschwitz's youngest prisoners with a more tolerable environment, if only for a brief period, where they could be shielded from the stark reality of their surroundings.
