Biography

A renowned figure in the realm of silent cinema, this talented American director, cinematographer, and assistant director made a lasting impact on the industry. Hailing from the vibrant city of Chicago, he was fortunate enough to be the nephew of E.J. Hite, a prominent figure at the Thanhauser Film Co. With his uncle's guidance, he received expert training as a cameraman, and later, he made the bold decision to relocate to California, where he worked as a camera operator for Fine Arts Productions. His exceptional skills did not go unnoticed, as he was soon hired by director Marshall Neilan as an assistant director, a role that ultimately led to his collaboration with James Cruze on multiple film projects as a cinematographer. From 1920 onwards, Urson formed a long-standing partnership with the illustrious Cecil B. DeMille, working closely with him as an assistant director on many of his notable films, while also directing his own projects for DeMille and other esteemed directors. Despite his impressive accomplishments, his life was tragically cut short when he drowned during a visit to Michigan at the tender age of 41.
