Biography

Frank Beyer, a renowned German film director, began his career in the theater after completing his studies in theater studies. He started as an intern at a theater and later became a stage dramaturge. Meanwhile, he attended the Film School in Prague, where he honed his skills as a filmmaker. During his studies, Beyer gained valuable experience as an assistant to the renowned director Kurt Maetzig, working on films such as "Castles and Cats" in 1957.

Beyer's graduation film, "Two Mothers," a 1957 adaptation of Berthold Brecht's "The Caucasian Chalk Circle," marked his directorial debut. He went on to make anti-fascist films like "Naked Among Wolves" in 1963 and "Jakob the Liar" in 1974, as well as film comedies.

His breakthrough as a celebrated director of comedies came with the genre piece "Karbid und Sauerampfer" in 1963. Frank Beyer became one of the most important filmmakers in the GDR, alongside Gerhard Klein, Joachim Kunert, and Konrad Wolf, but his works also sparked political controversy.

His film "Trace of the Stones," which premiered in 1966, was removed from the cinema program after just three days due to anti-socialist content. The film, starring Manfred Krug, was not shown in cinemas again until 1989. Beyer's work repeatedly challenged the ideas of those responsible for GDR culture.

This led to his expulsion from the state film production company DEFA. Beyer was then hired by the theater in Dresden but faced constant obstacles from the state. In 1980, he received permission to make films in the Federal Republic of Germany.

Initially, his 1977 film "The Hideaway" was banned in the GDR because the main actor, Manfred Krug, had fled to West Germany. The film was only shown to the public a year later. In 1983, Beyer's film "The Stay" was not shown at the Berlinale due to Polish protests, as it featured a German SS man being innocently accused of murder while in Polish captivity.

Beyer's later film works dealt with socially critical and political themes. His 1991 film "End of Innocence" explored the Germans' relationship with the atomic bomb, based on a template by Wolfgang Menge. "She and He" followed in 1992, a film about a marital crisis. In 1995, he made "Nikolaikirche," a film about a family during the time of reunification.

Two years later, Beyer remade Carl Zuckmayer's "The Captain of Köpenick" with Harald Juhnke. His autobiographical film "Abgehaut" provided insight into the life of Manfred Krug. Other notable film titles include "Königskinder" (1962),"The Seven Affairs of Dona Juanita" (1973),"The Second Skin" (1981),"Bockshorn" (1983),and "The Big Feast" in 1992.
