Biography

Floyd Patterson's early life was marked by poverty and a troubled childhood, which led him to discover his passion for boxing at a young age. At just 14 years old, he began his boxing journey, initially competing as an amateur in the middleweight division. From 1951 to 1952, he dominated the US championship in this weight class, and his success led him to participate in the Olympic Games in Helsinki in 1952, where he won the gold medal at the tender age of 17.

Patterson's amateur success paved the way for a professional career, which he began immediately after winning the Olympics. He went on to win several fights, culminating in a knockout victory over Archie Moore in 1956, which earned him the world heavyweight title at the age of 21, making him the youngest heavyweight champion at the time.

As world champion, Patterson successfully defended his title four times, but his reign was eventually ended by Swedish challenger Ingemar Johansson in 1959. Patterson regained his title in a rematch against Johansson in 1960, only to lose it again to Sonny Liston in 1962. He went on to lose his world championship title to Liston by knockout in the first round.

Patterson continued his professional career until the early 1970s, during which he faced some of the greatest boxers of his time, including Muhammad Ali. In 1965, he challenged Ali for the world championship title, but was knocked out in the 12th round. He faced Ali again in 1972, losing by knockout in the seventh round.

Patterson's professional career ended with a record of 55 wins in 63 fights, 40 of which were by knockout. After retiring from boxing, he served as chairman of the New York State Athletic Commission for many years.

Floyd Patterson passed away on May 11, 2006, in New York, leaving behind a legacy as one of the greatest heavyweight boxers of all time.
