She began her career as a beauty queen in Florida before switching to acting, earning a degree from Boston University in 1962. Dunaway's early stage career was marked by appearances in productions such as "A Man For All Seasons" and "After the Fall." Her screen debut came in the 1967 film "The Happening," followed by her breakout role as Bonnie Parker in "Bonnie and Clyde" (1967),for which she received Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations.

She also appeared in a number of television series and films, including "The Twilight of the Golds" (1996) and "Gia" (1998).
