Ezel Akay, a multifaceted individual, was born in the year 1961. His academic pursuits took him to Bosphorus University, where he studied engineering, and later to Villanova University, where he delved into the world of theatre arts. Prior to venturing into film production, Akay honed his skills as an actor and director in numerous theatre productions.
As a founding partner of IFR, Akay made a significant impact in the film industry, serving as the director of over 900 commercials. His impressive portfolio caught the attention of Dervis Zaim, and in 1996, Akay produced Zaim's feature film debut, "Somersault in a Coffin". This groundbreaking film went on to win an unprecedented number of international awards, solidifying its place in the annals of Turkish cinema.
The success of "Somersault in a Coffin" paved the way for Akay's future endeavors, and he subsequently took on the role of executive producer for Yesim Ustaoglu's "Journey to the Sun". This film, too, garnered widespread acclaim at international festivals, including the esteemed Berlin Film Festival.
