Biography

Russian-born French art director and director, Aleksandr Lourié, gained a significant reputation in the film industry, particularly as a collaborator with renowned director Jean Renoir. At the tender age of sixteen, Lourié made the bold decision to leave his homeland and relocate to Paris, where he pursued his passion for art and design. He immersed himself in the world of painting and stage design, eventually transitioning to set and costume design for various ballet companies.

As his skills and expertise continued to flourish, Lourié turned his attention to the world of film, working as a co-art director on several projects, including two films directed by Renoir. His talents did not go unnoticed, and he was soon entrusted with the role of sole art director on Renoir's critically acclaimed film, The Grand Illusion, released in 1937.

Lourié's collaboration with Renoir continued, and the two worked together on numerous projects, including a trip to America in 1941. His impressive portfolio also included work as art director for Charles Chaplin's final American film, Limelight, released in 1952.

In addition to his work as an art director, Lourié also branched out into directing, specializing in the unique genre of giant-monster films. His creative vision extended beyond directing, as he often took on the roles of art director and special effects expert on his projects.

Throughout his illustrious career, Lourié remained a respected figure in the film industry, continuing to work as an art director well into the 1980s. His life was tragically cut short following a series of strokes, resulting in his death from heart failure at the reported age of 89. However, according to most reference works, Lourié was born in 1905, which would have made him approximately 86 years old at the time of his passing.

Lourié left behind a loving wife, Laure, and a daughter, a testament to the enduring legacy of his life and work.
