Biography

Esther Garrel is a French actress renowned for her captivating performances in films such as Luca Guadagnino's critically acclaimed "Call Me by Your Name" (2017) and "Lover for a Day" (2017),which premiered at the prestigious 2017 Cannes Film Festival.

Born into a family with a rich history in French cinema, Esther is the youngest member of a family of esteemed actors and directors. Her grandfather, Maurice Garrel, was a prominent actor, while her parents, Philippe Garrel and Brigitte Sy, are both respected filmmakers and actresses. Her older brother, Louis Garrel, is also an accomplished actor.

Esther's journey in the film industry began at the tender age of eight, when she made her screen debut in a short film by Gérard Courant, titled "Zanzibar à Saint-Sulpice" (1999).

In 2008, French filmmaker Christophe Honoré cast her in her first major role in "The Beautiful Person" (2008),a modernized adaptation of "La Princesse de Clèves". This marked the beginning of a successful career for the young actress.

Esther's subsequent roles include starring in "The Apollonide", where she played a prostitute, and "17 Girls" (2011),where she portrayed a pregnant teenager, both of which premiered at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival.

In 2016, she starred alongside some of the top French actors of her generation in the short film "Après Suzanne", which was selected for the Official competition at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival.

Recently, Esther has collaborated with American filmmaker Nathan Silver on "Thirst Street" (2017),which premiered at the 2017 Tribeca Film Festival and the Venice International Film Festival, as well as "The Great Pretender" (2018),which premiered at the 2018 Tribeca Film Festival.
