Biography

Ernesto Yerena Montejano, a multifaceted artist, was born in a mid-sized farming town situated on the border of Mexicali, BC, MX.

His cross-national upbringing has significantly influenced his artistic practice, which is characterized by his observations of the interactions and views between Mexican communities living on both sides of the U.S.-Mexico border.

As a Chicano, Yerena identifies with the struggles of identity that many Chicanos experience, and his work often reflects his own conflicts and those of his community.

Furthermore, Yerena strongly identifies as Native/Indigenous to this continent, which is often reflected in his artwork.

His creative output is deeply rooted in his frustrations with the oppression in his community, as well as his desire to create work in solidarity with his community in defense of dignity and rights.

Through his bold and unapologetic imagery, Yerena brings political concerns to the forefront, often depicting cultural icons, rebels, and everyday people voicing their opposition to oppression.

In 2008, Yerena founded the Hecho Con Ganas publishing project, which produces limited edition silkscreen prints featuring socially and politically conscious images.

Highly recognized for his activism, Yerena is the founder and curator of the Alto Arizona Art campaign, established in 2010, as well as a founding member of the We Are Human campaign, launched in 2009.

Throughout his career, Yerena has collaborated with numerous thought-provoking projects, including those with notable artists such as Zack de la Rocha, Shepard Fairey, Manu Chao, Ana Tijoux, Philip Lumbang, Jaque Fragua, Diane Ovalle, Chuck D, and Mochilla.
