After completing high school, he embarked on a stagemanager role with one of the largest professional theatre companies in the Netherlands, where he gained valuable experience in set building and stage lighting from 1967 to 1968.

Subsequently, he pursued his passion for the performing arts by studying at the Amsterdam Academy for Dramatic Art from 1968 to 1972. During this period, he was trained as an assistant-director by renowned directors William Gaskill at the Royal Court Theatre in London, and Hagen Mueller-Stahl and Roland Kabelitsch. He specialized in television direction in his final year of studies and graduated as a theatre and television director, as well as a qualified drama teacher.

Following his graduation, he worked as a director with various professional theatre companies from 1972 to 1976, while also serving as a trainee supervisor at the Amsterdam Academy for Dramatic Art.

In 1977, he made the transition to television directing and joined IKON Television as a drama/director-producer. Concurrently, he held visiting lecturer positions at the NOS-Training Department, the Theatre Academy in Maastricht, and the Dutch Film and Television Academy in Amsterdam. Throughout his career, he has directed and produced over a dozen drama series, half a dozen single plays, and made-for-television-movies, with the majority shot using one-camera technique on location, resulting in more than 65 hours of television drama.

His work has received numerous national and international awards and has been sold to foreign broadcasting companies on multiple occasions. Since 1990, he has also ventured into writing screenplays and professional literature. He has served as a member of several national and international juries, including the Prix d'Italia in 1985 and 1989, and has been a member of the jury for the Geneva-Europe Prizes for Television Writing of the EBU four times.
