Biography

Emily Jane Cohen was a renowned American journalist, whose professional endeavors primarily revolved around China, and she notably dedicated over two decades of her career to writing for The Economist.

Following a year-long stint in Taiwan, where she endeavored to hone her skills in the Chinese language, she returned to the United States, but her journey didn't end there. She continued her travels, making a stop in India, where she unexpectedly crossed paths with her former supervisor, who was in the country to cover the funeral of Nehru. This chance encounter ultimately led to a romantic connection, and the couple tied the knot just six months later.

After exchanging vows, they settled in London, where The Economist welcomed Emily as a member of their team in 1965. Her daily routine consisted of embarking on extensive interview trips to Asia on a regular basis, in addition to relying on reports from The Economist's vast network of freelance contributors at other times.

In the latter stages of her tenure in London, Emily also expanded her professional repertoire by working with British television on Channel 4, where she covered a wide range of political stories, including those emanating from Northern Ireland, Hong Kong, and British regional issues.
