Born in Mexico City, Jorge Portes began drawing storyboards while studying film school, laying the foundation for a successful career in comedy filmmaking. His first feature film, "Conozca la Cabeza de Juan Pérez", a horror-comedy about a lowlife magician who steals a cursed guillotine, won the Opera Prima Award and Best Actress Award at Guadalajara's Film Festival in 2008.
This critically acclaimed film went on to win four Ariel Awards from the Mexican Film Academy in 2010, including Best Supporting Actor, Wardrobe Design, and Visual Effects. Portes' second film, "Pastorela", a Christmas horror-comedy about police agents vs. exorcists, opened at number two at the Mexican box office in 2011, holding strong in the top ten for six weeks and remaining in the top 20 for 11 weeks overall, selling over one million tickets.
The film's success was matched by its accolades, winning seven Mexican Academy Awards in 2012 for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Supporting Actor, Wardrobe Design, Makeup Design, and Visual Effects. Portes' third film as director and screenwriter, "El Crimen del Cacaro Gumaro", a film parody about Mexican cinema, was a major hit, featuring the debut of beloved Mexican comedian Andrés Bustamante and becoming the seventh-best opening weekend ever for a Mexican film.
Portes is currently developing a horror film and a mockumentary, further expanding his range as a filmmaker. With a proven track record of success and a keen sense of humor, Jorge Portes is a force to be reckoned with in the world of Mexican comedy filmmaking.
