Biography

Emilie Autumn's life story began in Malibu, California, where she was born and raised, surrounded by the iconic beaches and stunning coastline of the Golden State. At the tender age of four, she embarked on a journey that would shape her future, learning the intricacies of the violin with dedication and passion. This early start was merely the beginning of her remarkable tale, as she left regular school just five years later, driven by a singular goal: to become a world-class violinist.

As she continued to hone her craft, Autumn began writing her own music, seeking guidance from various teachers and mentors. Her thirst for knowledge led her to Indiana University, where she initially pursued her studies. However, she eventually parted ways with the institution due to creative differences and a desire to push the boundaries of classical music, refusing to conform to traditional norms. Instead, she opted to forge her own path, establishing her independent label, Traitor Records.

Autumn's debut album, On a Day: Music for Violin & Continuo, showcased her classical prowess, setting the stage for her subsequent releases. In 2003, she unleashed her supernatural-themed album, Enchant, further solidifying her unique sound. As a sufferer of bipolar disorder, Autumn often draws inspiration from her experiences, using her struggles as a source of creative fuel.

In 2004, Autumn's life took a dramatic turn when she attempted suicide and was subsequently admitted to a psychiatric ward at a Los Angeles hospital. After her release, she chose to commemorate her time in the hospital by tattooing the cell block number on her right arm, serving as a poignant reminder of her journey. This harrowing experience also prompted her to pen her autobiographical novel, The Asylum for Wayward Victorian Girls, which was published in 2010, offering a candid glimpse into her life and struggles.
