Elsa Poblete Bustamante is a multifaceted and accomplished artist, exceling in various fields of the performing arts. Born into an artistic family, her father Gustavo Poblete, a renowned painter, directed the School of Fine Arts at the University of Chile. She pursued her passion for acting at the School of Representation Arts, graduating in 1975.
Elsa's early career took off when she joined the Theater of the Catholic University of Chile, directed by Eugenio Dittborn. She performed in numerous productions, showcasing her versatility and talent in classical repertoire pieces such as "Arauco tamed", "Life is a dream", "El burlador de Sevilla", "Casa de Muñecas", and "La viuda de Apablaza". Her beautiful voice and solid stage presence earned her recognition and acclaim.
In addition to her work with the Theater of the Catholic University of Chile, Elsa has collaborated with various theater groups, including the Ictus Company, a prominent ensemble during the military dictatorship. She has also performed with Young Theater, Teatro La Feria, Teatro de la Pasión Inextinguible, End of the Century Theater, and under the direction of esteemed directors such as Jaime Vadell, Ramón Griffero, Ramón López, Ramón Núñez, and Gustavo Meza.
For 24 years, Elsa has been a dedicated member of Teatro Imagen, founded by her husband, the renowned director and playwright Gustavo Meza.
Elsa has also made a significant impact in film, featuring in notable titles such as "The border" by Ricardo Larraín, "Taxi for three" by Orlando Lübert, "No" and "Tony Manero" by Pablo Larraín, among others. Her leading role in "The third soccer story" earned her widespread critical acclaim and a shared award for best actress at the Brasilia Film Festival alongside María Izquierdo.
Throughout her illustrious career, Elsa has received numerous accolades, including the Professor Pedro de la Barra Medal of Cultural Merit from the University of Chile and the Rector's Medal, awarded by the Rector of the University of Chile, in recognition of her outstanding contributions to the world of acting. She is a Professor of Acting and General Coordinator of the IMAGEN Theater School, and a member of the Academy of Fine Arts of the Institute of Chile. In 2020, she will be honored with a tribute by the Santiago a Mil International Festival, celebrating her remarkable legacy in the performing arts.
