Elka Nikolova, a New York-based film director of Bulgarian origin, embarked on a significant life chapter in 1994 when she relocated to New York City. Prior to this move, she had been born in Bulgaria, a country that would later serve as the backdrop for her filmmaking endeavors.
Nikolova's academic pursuits led her to enroll in a Master of Arts program in Media Studies at the prestigious New School University, which she successfully completed in 2001. This educational milestone marked a turning point in her career, paving the way for her entry into the world of filmmaking.
One of Nikolova's most notable directorial achievements is her documentary film, Binka: To Tell a Story About Silence. This critically acclaimed documentary has played a crucial role in revitalizing interest in the work and legacy of the pioneering Bulgarian film director, Binka Zhelyazkova (1923-2011). The film's premiere took place at the esteemed Museum of Modern Art in New York in April 2007, garnering widespread attention and acclaim.
Currently, Nikolova is working on a new documentary project that sheds light on the harrowing experiences of Bulgarian Jews during World War II. This ambitious undertaking is a testament to her dedication to exploring the complexities of human history and her commitment to sharing powerful stories with a wider audience.
