Mary Elizabeth Hartman was born on December 23, 1943, in Boardman, Ohio, to Bill C. Hartman and Claire Mullaly, as the middle child of three. Growing up in Youngstown, Ohio, Hartman developed a passion for acting, participating in the Youngstown Playhouse production of "A Clearing in the Woods".
