Biography

Elissa Landi, a talented actress and writer, was born on December 6, 1904, in the beautiful city of Venice, Italy. From a young age, she was determined to pursue a career in the performing arts, driven by her passion for acting and writing.

Elissa's early career began at the Oxford Repertory Company and on London's West End, where she had the opportunity to work alongside renowned actors such as Laurence Olivier and John Gielgud. She played the iconic role of Desdemona in "Othello" and appeared in various plays, including "Blithe Spirit," where she famously had to enter through the fireplace due to a jammed door.

Her success on the stage led to a string of film roles, including the German-made "Synd" (1928) and eight films over the next two years. However, it wasn't until she played Anthea Dane in "The Price of Things" (1930) that she received critical acclaim.

In 1931, Elissa moved to New York to star in the stage production of "A Farewell to Arms," which although not a huge success, caught the attention of Hollywood. She soon appeared in "Body and Soul" (1931) opposite Charles Farrell and later in Cecil B. DeMille's biblical epic "The Sign of the Cross" (1932),which became a massive hit.

Elissa's subsequent films included "A Passport to Hell" (1932),"Devil's Lottery" (1932),and "The Warrior's Husband" (1933),a film about the intrigues of the Roman Empire. In 1934, she co-starred with Robert Donat in the classic "The Count of Monte Cristo" and the following year, she appeared alongside Cary Grant in "Enter Madame!" (1935),where she demonstrated her singing talents.

Throughout her career, Elissa continued to pursue her passion for writing, often working on scripts and novels between film shoots. She wrote six novels and poetry volumes, and after leaving the film industry, she focused on Broadway, regional theater, and summer stock productions near Kingston, New York.

Tragically, Elissa's life was cut short when she succumbed to cancer on October 21, 1948, at the age of 43. Despite her relatively short career, she left a lasting impact on the entertainment industry and will always be remembered as a talented and multifaceted artist.
