Edward's educational journey began at South Shields Grammar Technical School, where he spent seven years from 1958 to 1965, laying the foundation for his future academic pursuits. He then went on to attend Manchester University, where he earned his Bachelor of Arts Honours degree in 1970.

He currently serves as the chair of the Northern Electric Arts Awards, a prestigious recognition of outstanding artistic talent. Additionally, he is a member of the board for Northern Stage Co., a renowned theater company. His involvement with the Royal Overseas League, British Actors Equity, and Directors Guild of Great Britain further demonstrates his commitment to the arts.
