One of his most notable stories was the high-profile Tom Capano/Anne Marie Fahey murder case, which garnered national attention on MSNBC and NBC's "Today" Show. His live breaking news coverage of the Capano verdict earned him an Emmy nomination.

Throughout his career, Shimell's reporting has led to significant impacts on his community. He has reported on cases involving identity theft, scam contractors, and inhumane puppy mill pet stores, resulting in laws being passed to protect consumers and bringing about arrests and closures.

Shimell's exclusive reports on the Amy Grossberg/Brian Peterson infant murder case significantly changed the complexion of the investigation. His stories on the illegal Mexican diet pill trade led to an FDA ban on certain drugs, and his reports on political corruption in Texas resulted in arrests and resignations.

As a political reporter in Oklahoma, Shimell's story on illegal campaign contributions to the governor made him the subject of a "State of the State" speech and ultimately led to the governor's resignation. His coverage of a Philadelphia-area group that brought an entire prom to Katrina-ravaged Biloxi High School in Mississippi earned him another Emmy nomination.

Doug Shimell's reporting has also been recognized with numerous awards, including a national Emmy nomination for his coverage of a fatal natural gas explosion in Northeast Philadelphia, which helped initiate a state investigation of Philadelphia Gas Works. He has also received awards from the Associated Press, Society of Professional Journalists, National Press Photographers Association, The Livingston Awards, and local press clubs.

Born in New Rochelle, New York, Shimell grew up in Connecticut and graduated from the University of South Carolina with a degree in Journalism. In his free time, he enjoys playing tennis, working out, and captaining NBC10's "Fighting Peacocks" gold medal-winning Dragonboat team.
