Donna Reed was born Donna Belle Mullenger on January 27, 1921, in Denison, Iowa, a small town with a population of less than 3,000 people, located by the Boyer River and serving as the county seat of Crawford County. Growing up as a farm girl, Donna's beauty stood out among her peers, earning her a beauty contest title in Denison. After graduating from high school, she left for Los Angeles to pursue a career in movies, attending Los Angeles City College and participating in several college stage productions, including winning the title of Campus Queen.
