Biography

Dilys Laye, a ravishing raven-haired beauty, with a penchant for blonde locks, particularly in her earlier years, is a talented actress capable of a vast array of roles, effortlessly transitioning between dramatic and comedic performances. Her illustrious career in the British film industry began in the 1950s, amidst the studio-system-style films that dominated the era. One of her earliest cinematic endeavors was Paper Gallows in 1950, followed by notable appearances in popular movies such as Blue Murder at St. Trinian's (1957) and Doctor at Large (1957).

Today, Dilys Laye is often revered for her memorable roles in the iconic "Carry On..." film series. Her first "Carry On..." appearance was in Carry on Cruising (1962),where she, alongside Esma Cannon, stole the show with her impeccable comedic timing, particularly in the renowned bar scene. This was a last-minute substitution, as she took over the role at four days' notice, following Joan Sims' unfortunate illness. Her subsequent "Carry On..." appearances showcased her versatility, as she took on a more sinister and darker role in Carry on Spying (1964) as Lila, even displaying her vocal talents in a café-bar scene.

Dilys Laye's subsequent roles in the "Carry On..." franchise included Carry on Doctor (1967),where she played the charming patient Mavis Winkle, and Carry on Camping (1969),alongside the legendary Joan Sims. The duo's on-screen chemistry was undeniable, as they expertly complemented each other's performances throughout the film.

Following her time in the "Carry On..." series, Dilys Laye's work primarily shifted to the stage, with occasional television and film appearances. She made notable appearances in British soaps such as Coronation Street (1960) and EastEnders (1985),as well as character parts in Holby City (1999) and Doctors (2000).

In a particularly memorable role, Dilys Laye brought Queen Elizabeth II to life in The Amazing Mrs Pritchard (2006),further cementing her status as a talented and versatile actress.
