Denis Law CBE, a Scottish former footballer, was born on February 24, 1940. He began his football career at Second Division Huddersfield Town in 1956, where he spent four years before being signed by Manchester City for a record-breaking £55,000 transfer fee.
After a year at Manchester City, Law was sold to Torino for £110,000, setting a new record fee for a British player. Although he performed well in Italy, he struggled to adjust to the country and was eventually signed by Manchester United in 1962 for £115,000, another British record transfer fee.
Law spent 11 years at Manchester United, where he scored an impressive 237 goals in 404 appearances, placing him third in the club's history. He earned the nicknames "The King," "The Lawman," and "Denis the Menace" from fans, and "Denis the Menace" from opposing supporters.
Law is the only Scottish player to have won the Ballon d'Or award, which he received in 1964. He also helped Manchester United win the First Division title in 1965 and 1967, as well as the FA Cup in 1963 and two Charity Shields.
Law missed Manchester United's European Cup final victory in 1968 due to injury. He left the club in 1973 to return to Manchester City for a season, and represented Scotland at the 1974 FIFA World Cup.
Law played only two competitive games in the 1974-75 season before retiring at the start of the League programme. He played 55 times for Scotland, jointly holding the Scottish international record goal tally with 30 goals. Law also holds a United record for scoring 46 competitive goals in a single season.
In 2023, Law became the last remaining member of the "United Trinity" following the death of Sir Bobby Charlton.
