David Hillel Gelernter, a renowned American computer scientist, artist, and writer, holds the esteemed position of professor of computer science at Yale University. His remarkable contributions to the field of parallel computation during the 1980s have had a lasting impact on the industry. In addition to his technical expertise, Gelernter is also a prolific author, having written extensively on topics such as computed worlds.
However, Gelernter's life took a dramatic turn in 1993 when he received a mail bomb sent by Ted Kaczynski, also known as the Unabomber. Despite the warning signs, Gelernter opened the package, which resulted in a devastating explosion that nearly took his life. The blast left him with permanent and debilitating injuries, including the loss of use of his right hand and significant damage to his right eye.
