David embarked upon his illustrious career with esteemed repertory companies at the renowned Barter Theatre in Virginia, America, and the prestigious Hartford Stage Company. His New York debut was marked by a standout performance as one of the twins in A Comedy of Errors at Joseph Papp's Shakespeare Festival. In 1968, he took center stage as the lead in Summertree at New York's iconic Lincoln Centre, earning the esteemed Clarence Derwent Award and the Theatre World Award for his outstanding portrayal.

Following his theatrical success, David transitioned to television, landing the lead role of Mark Elliott in the popular series Love is a Many Splendored Thing. His subsequent appearance as Bernie in the beloved comedy series Bridget Loves Bernie cemented his status as a household name across America, garnering numerous accolades and awards along the way.
