David Legge MBE, also known as Dave Lee, was a renowned British comedian who made a lasting impact in the entertainment industry, particularly in pantomimes around Kent, and on television.
Throughout his illustrious career, Lee was dedicated to giving back to his community, and his tireless efforts led to the establishment of his own charity, Happy Holidays, which aimed to provide joy and relief to disadvantaged children.
Under Lee's guidance, Happy Holidays raised an astonishing £2 million, enabling countless sick, disabled, and under-privileged children in Kent to experience the magic of holidays and outings with their families.
In recognition of his selfless contributions to the community, Lee was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the 2003 New Year Honours, a testament to his dedication to the people of Kent.
In the days leading up to his passing, Canterbury announced that Lee would be awarded the Freedom of the City, a prestigious honor that was bestowed upon him posthumously.
Sadly, Lee's life was cut short on January 16, 2012, at the age of 64, due to pancreatic cancer. His funeral, held at Canterbury Cathedral on January 30, 2012, was attended by over 1,200 mourners, including notable figures from the entertainment industry and local dignitaries.
A bronze statue of Lee was unveiled outside the Marlowe Theatre in May 2014, serving as a lasting tribute to his remarkable legacy and the enduring impact he had on the lives of those around him.
