Danielle Arbid, a filmmaker born in Lebanon in 1970, has been directing films since 1997. Her work has been showcased at numerous festivals across France and the globe, including Cannes, New York, San Francisco, Locarno, Pusan, and Tokyo.
Arbid's first two feature films, Dans les champs de bataille and Un homme perdu, premiered at the Directors' Fortnight at the Cannes Festival in 2004 and 2007, respectively. These films were also screened at around thirty other festivals, garnering numerous awards, including the Directors' Fortnight Prize and the Milan Grand Prize.
A versatile filmmaker, Arbid's work experiments with different narrative forms, seamlessly blending fiction, first-person documentaries, and video essays. Her documentaries and filmed essays have received widespread acclaim, earning dozens of awards, such as the Gold Leopard for Conversations de salon at the Locarno Festival and the Silver Leopard for Seule avec la guerre in 2001 and 2004, respectively.
Arbid's documentaries have also won the Prix Albert Londres and the Villa Medicis hors les murs Award for Aux Frontieres. Furthermore, four retrospectives have been held in honor of her films at the Bastia Festival in 2007, Paris cinema in 2007, the Gijon Festival in 2007, and the La Rochelle Festival in 2008.
In 2016, Arbid's third fiction feature, Peur de rien (Parisienne),was released theatrically in France on February 10. The film won the Academie Lumiere foreign press prize, as well as other awards, including the Best Actress prize at Les Arcs. The film received rave reviews from the French press and premiered at the Toronto Film Festival.
