Daniel Rodríguez Risco is a Peruvian director, writer, and producer whose films often explore the fantastic and possess a mysterious quality that is unsettling and thought-provoking.
Throughout his career, Rodríguez Risco has achieved significant success, with several of his films receiving critical acclaim and winning awards at prestigious international film festivals. He has also collaborated with notable production companies, including HBO, Netflix, Fox, Canal Plus, and others.
In 1997, Rodríguez Risco founded Cinecorp, a film production company that later changed its name to El Colchón Films in 2021. This innovative company has established itself as a force to be reckoned with in the film industry.
Rodríguez Risco's early work includes his first short film, El colchón (The Mattress),which received a Special Mention at the Cartagena IFF and the award for Best Short Film at Conacine (Peru). His subsequent short film, Triunfador (The Winner),was selected at the Festival du Court Métrages at Clermont-Ferrand and was distributed internationally by Canal-Plus.
Rodríguez Risco received a scholarship to study an MFA in Film at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts, which allowed him to further hone his craft. After completing his studies, he directed Páramo (Moor),based on a short story by Alberto Moravia.
His fourth short film, El Diente de Oro (The Gold Tooth),won the Jury Prize at the Montreal World Film Festival, presided by Theo Angelopolous. Cuellos Almidonados (Starched Collars),shot during the pandemic, won Santa Lucía's Prize for Best Short Film F3 in Bogoshorts (Colombia) and Best Cinematography in the ÉCU, The European Independent Film Festival (France).
Rodríguez Risco has also directed several medium-length films, including Trilogía Muda (Silent Trilogy),which won Best Film at the NewBorn Short Film Festival (Germany) in 2022.
Throughout his career, Rodríguez Risco has directed six feature films. El Acuarelista (The Watercolorist) was awarded a grant from the Global Film Initiative. His next film, El Vientre (The Womb),a coproduction with Explora Films (Spain),earned him a Best Director nomination at the Vancouver IFF. In 2016, he released the films No Estamos Solos (We Are Not Alone) and Siete Semillas (Seven Seeds),starring Javier Cámara. His film Cuadrilátero (Quadrilateral) won the Special Jury Award and the Youth Jury Award COMUNDO in the Fribourg IFF in 2024.
In addition to his work as a director, Rodríguez Risco has also served as an Associate Producer on the European co-production Altiplano, which premiered at Cannes, and co-produced the documentary Chavín de Huántar, el Teatro del Más Allá (Chavin de Huantar, the Theatre Beyond) with Wanda Films (Spain),which premiered at the National Geographic Channel.
Rodríguez Risco is currently working on the post-production of La costurera (The seamstress),starring Mayella Lloclla, Aitana Sánchez-Gijón, and Luis Gnecco. The film is set to premiere in 2026.
