Daniel Quinn was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to Roger, a sales manager for Pabst Brewing Company, and Rosemary, an employment agency owner. He has two older sisters, Kathleen and Colleen. Quinn began performing at age eight, appearing as Kurt in The Sound of Music and forming his first garage band on drums. He continued to perform in various stage productions, including The Music Man and West Side Story.
Quinn's passion for horses began at age six, and he would later use this skill in his acting career, starring in four western film productions. He became a member of the International Thespian Society at 17 and traveled to London to study at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. Quinn also studied at the Royal Shakespeare Company school at Stratford-upon-Avon.
After returning to the United States, Quinn joined the Milwaukee Ballet Company and performed in several regional productions. He then moved to New York City to pursue his artistic dreams, attending the Harkness School of Ballet and the School of American Ballet at Juilliard.
