Cosima Shaw's upbringing in Berlin, Germany, was marked by a unique linguistic and cultural blend, as she was raised bilingually by her German mother, a classically trained violinist, and her American father, a writer and translator. This diverse background likely influenced her early interests and pursuits, as she initially trained in dance and singing, in addition to jobbing in commercials and modeling, all while balancing her academic studies.

Shaw's transition to an acting career was marked by a significant breakthrough when she was cast as the German lesbian receptionist in the BBC1 comedy, Trevor's World of Sport (2003),written and directed by Andy Hamilton. This notable role led to further opportunities in feature films, including V for Vendetta (2005),The Danish Girl (2015),and Papadopoulos & Sons (2012).
